Thinking About Changing NetSuite Partners? 5 Things To Know

Team members walking through a modern office discussing work together.

Changing NetSuite partners isn’t usually something you plan for.

Most companies would prefer to stick with the partner they originally implemented with, but over time, support relationships can change. As your business evolves, you may find that response times have slowed down or that the level of ongoing support no longer matches what was originally promised during implementation.

At the same time, changing partners can feel risky. Your NetSuite system could have years of history behind it, including customizations, integrations and workflows your team depends on every day. Bringing in a new partner can raise a lot of questions around disruption, cost and whether you’ll need to start over.

Switching NetSuite partners is more common than many businesses realize and it doesn’t necessarily mean re-implementing your system from scratch!

At ProjectLine, we work with small and mid-size businesses on both NetSuite implementations and ongoing support. We've supported systems originally implemented by other partners, so we’re used to helping businesses navigate transitions while keeping day-to-day operations running smoothly.

In this article, we’ll walk through some of the most important things to know before switching NetSuite partners, including how transitions work, what to expect and how to reduce disruption during the process.

1. Can another partner support my existing NetSuite system?

Yes, you can work with a different NetSuite partner from the one that originally implemented your system.

For example, if your NetSuite environment was originally implemented by NetSuite’s direct team or another NetSuite partner, you can still choose to work with a different partner later for ongoing support, consulting or optimization.

Transitioning Support for an Existing NetSuite Environment

One business we worked with came to us several years after their original NetSuite implementation. Their environment included multiple customizations, integrations and reporting processes that had evolved over time—but they were struggling with ongoing support responsiveness and needed a partner that could provide more consistent guidance moving forward.

Rather than recommending a full rebuild, the first step was understanding how their system was being used today. We identified operational friction points and stabilized support around the existing environment. From there, improvements were prioritized gradually based on business impact and long-term operational needs.

2. Will I need to change my NetSuite Partner of Record to work with another partner?

No, you don’t need to change your NetSuite Partner of Record to begin working with a new partner.

Your Partner of Record is the NetSuite partner associated with your licensing and account management, but you can still work with another partner for support and ongoing services without immediately changing your licensing relationship.

You may prefer having the same partner manage both your NetSuite account relationship and ongoing consulting support to simplify communication and coordination over time, especially as your support needs continue to evolve.

If, at some point, you want to evaluate whether changing your Partner of Record makes sense for licensing, administration or renewal management—that conversation can happen at any time, but it’s not required in order to begin working with a new support partner.

3. How are NetSuite support services typically priced?

In most cases, NetSuite consulting and support can be structured in several different ways depending on the partner and the type of support you need.

Some partners offer monthly retainers or managed services for ongoing administration and support, while other use time-and-materials or fixed-price engagements for project-based work.

In support takeover situations, time-and-materials engagements are often a practical choice because priorities, timelines and scope can evolve as a new partner gets familiar with your environment. Fixed-price work can still make sense for clearly defined projects, and managed services may be a good option if you need ongoing administrative support.

Your support model should match the type of help you need. In many NetSuite support takeover situations, flexible engagement models work better because priorities and scope can evolve over time.

4. What happens when changing NetSuite partners?

The first step when changing NetSuite partners is usually a structured review of your existing NetSuite environment.

The goal isn’t to critique past implementation decisions or immediately recommend major changes. Instead, the focus is on understanding how your system is configured today, how your team uses it and how NetSuite fits into your broader business operations.

That review may include things like:

  • System configurations
  • Custom scripts and workflows
  • Integrations with other systems
  • Reporting and dashboards
  • Current support issues or operational bottlenecks

This initial assessment is entirely optional, but we recommend it as it helps your new partner provide more accurate guidance, prioritize support needs and better estimate future work.

If your current NetSuite partner is willing to participate in a handoff, they may share context around recent work, open issues or known challenges within the system. But even if a formal handoff doesn’t happen, a new partner should still be able to move forward by reviewing existing documentation, scripts, integrations and internal workflows.

The goal during this transition is to understand how your system works today, identify where support challenges exist and establish a stable support rhythm with minimal disruption.

5. Will a new partner replace our existing customizations in NetSuite?

Not necessarily. One of the biggest concerns businesses have when switching NetSuite partners is whether a new partner will want to undo the work that’s already been done. In most cases, that’s not the goal.

Customizations, integrations and workflows are often there for a reason. They may support operational requirements, reporting needs or processes that are important to how your business runs day-to-day.

Before recommending major changes, a good NetSuite partner should first understand:

  • What the customization does
  • Who in your business relies on it
  • Whether it’s still delivering the desired value
  • Whether it’s creating operational or support challenges

From there, improvements can be prioritized more deliberately. Some of your customizations may simply need cleanup or optimization, while others may no longer be necessary as your business evolves or NetSuite functionality improves over time.

The important thing is that changes recommended by your NetSuite partner should have a clear business reason behind them, not just a desire to rebuild the system from scratch.

Switching NetSuite partners doesn’t mean starting over

Switching NetSuite partners can feel like a major decision, especially when your system supports critical day-to-day operations across your business. But changing support partners doesn’t mean you need to start over.

In many cases, the transition is about finding a partner that better aligns with your current needs, support expectations, organizational approach and long-term goals.

The most important thing is approaching the transition methodically. Understanding how support models work, what happens during the onboarding process and how existing customizations are evaluated can help reduce uncertainty and make the process much smoother.

Whether you’re dealing with slow response times, looking for more strategic guidance or simply reevaluating your current support relationship, taking the time to understand your options can help you make a more informed decision about what comes next.
